How long after checkout can a hotel charge my card?

I recently visited Geneva and stayed in a Best Western hotel. However, they seem to be charging items to my card at will - even though I checked out weeks ago. Apart from there amateur approach, is there a time limit to which they can keep my card details and charge me?
